The Science Matters package is designed to meet the needs of learners of the 21st Century. It is written in line with the 2013 Lower Secondary Science syllabus from the Ministry of Education, Singapore. This package cultivates a sense of curiosity in students about the world around them.

Lower Secondary Science Textbook helps students discover scientific knowledge by using extensive real-life contexts. The use of purposeful visuals helps to enhance the students’ learning experience. The book also provides visuals which helps to enhance the students’ learning experience. The books also provides many opportunities for students to develop scientific literacy through a strong foundation in Science.

  • Help students relate to scientific concepts – Each chapter starts with a real-life context from which concepts are developed. By providing many concrete examples, students learn more easily and appreciate Science to a deeper extent as they understand how concepts are applicable to their daily life. Context-based questions in the book also help students further apply what they have learnt to real-life situations.
  • Engages students through visuals – Infographics are employed to explain concepts without the monotony of running text. Information is communicated clearly and concisely in this manner. In addition, fascinating pictures are used to create excitement among students and make learning more enjoyable.
  • Communicates big ideas in Science – Links are provided so that students make connections between concepts learnt. Theme pages also outline the interconnectivity of concepts and questions are posed at the start of each theme to frame th ebig ideas of the chapters that follow.
  • Encourage critical thinking – Students are asked questions that require an extension of the concepts learnt. In addition, concepts are linked to their applications in society, and students are challenged to think about the concepts at a broader level and to understand the ethical issues surrounding science and technology.

Components of Lower Secondary Science Matters:

The Textbooks can be used in a school or home setting. They contain many visuals and graphical information with interesting information. The emphasis is on understanding concepts and thinking about science and some of the content is designed to stimulate inquisitiveness and further exploration. Interspersed in the text are many “Think and Explore” questions to get students to think about the concepts. Some of these are answered later in the text but the purpose is to get students to think rather than simply read on and be told. Each chapter is also followed by review questions, many of which encourage critical thinking rather than simply reiterating material in the textbook. It is therefore a series that invites discussion and involvement even in a home setting, rather than something students would use independently. The A and B books are a two-year series and cover biology, chemistry, and physics. Earth science, space science, and evolution are not covered. The biology focuses on vascular plants and vertebrate systems.

The Practical Books are meant for a school setting and require common laboratory equipment and material, including solutions. Many of them can be done in a home setting with the purchase of some equipment and adaptation of some activities, such as those using a Bunsen burner, as well as substitution of some material, such as using chicken eggs to observe osmosis rather than quail eggs, but the teacher/parent should know science well enough to know what substitutions will not affect the intended results. They also need to be aware of and enforce standard safety issues and precautions, particularly with the chemistry experiments. Some of the experiments do requires some more expensive equipment, such as a light microscope or a distillation tube, and can be omitted.

The Teacher’s Editions of the Practical Books are copies of the Practical student’s editions with answers printed on the pages.

The Workbooks can be easily used in a school or home setting. There are several worksheets for each chapter in the textbook and two reviews. The worksheets have a variety of problems, including multiple-choice, fill in the blank, and write an answer. There are also some mini-projects which require researching information from the environment or internet and performing a task. Some of these do refer to places specific to Singapore but can be easily adapted.

The Teacher’s Editions of the Workbooks are copies of the Workbook student’s editions with answers printed on the pages.
